Most of us already know that sitting down for too long and too often can be bad for our bodies. However, for many of us, we often have no choice as our jobs involve us to sit down nearly eight hours a day, five days per week. 

Here are the top twelve shocking health risks of sitting down too much. 

1. Cloudy Brain

Moving the body will pump fresh blood and oxygen to the brain and trigger the release of mood- and brain-enhancing chemicals. If we keep our body moving at a sedentary pace, our system will slow down, especially the brain function. 

2. Sore Back and Shoulders

While sitting, the body is more prone to slouching – ultimately affecting the neck, back and shoulders. Slumping will cause the body to overextend and affect the back muscles – most particularly, the trapezius that connects the shoulders and neck. 

3. Strained Neck

If most of the sitting happens at your desk at work, this may also mean that you crane your neck forward towards the keyboard or tilt as you hold a phone while typing. This practice has strained the cervical vertebrae and leads to a permanent imbalance in the body. 

4. Increase risk of heart disease

During a long sit, muscles tend to burn little to no fat and ultimately slow down blood flow throughout the body. This will allow the fatty acid to clog the heart efficiently and increase the risk of cholesterol and high levels of blood pressure. Individuals living in a sedentary lifestyle will be twice more likely to increase the possibility of heart disease.

Research shows that sitting down for extended periods of time is linked to increasing the risk of colon, endometrial, and breast cancer. While the reason is yet to be proven, one theory suggests that the excess production of insulin also encourages the growth of cells. With that, comes natural boosts of movement in natural antioxidants that free-radicals that damage the cell and also have the potential to cause cancer. 

6. Over-productive pancreas

According to a study taken in 2011, the decline in insulin can happen after a single day of prolonged sitting. The pancreas works to create insulin, which is a hormone that carries glucose energy to the cells. With weakened muscles, cells will have a hard time responding to insulin. This will cause the pancreas to produce more insulin and lead to diabetes as well as other forms of the disease. 

7. Inflexible Spine

The more we move, the more the soft disc between the vertebrae expands and makes contact like sponges. This helps to soak up the blood and nutrients in the body. However, sitting for extended periods of time, the discs have unevenly collided, and the collagen will harden around the ligaments and tendons.

The Psoas, which is the muscle that travels along the abdominal cavity, will pull the upper region of the lumbar spine upward as it tightens. This will allow the upper body to rest on the sitting bones, known as the ischial tuberosity, instead of evenly distributed through the spine. 

9. Weak Abs

Your abdominal muscles keep you upright as you stand, sit or even move up straight. When you slump in the chair, the muscles aren’t used. This leads to the tight muscles in the back and weakened abs to form posture-damage that will alter the natural arch of the spine. The condition is called hyperlordosis. 

10. Tight Hips

Our hips are valuable body regions that help to keep us balanced. However, chronic sitters rarely stretches the hip flexor muscles which makes them shorten and tighten up. The limited range of movement is the primary cause of falling in older adults. 

11. Poor Circulation

When you sit down for extended periods, this can slow down the blood flow and cause fluid to swell up in the leg region. The problems will range from varicose veins to swollen ankles and blood clots. 

12. Weakened bones

Weight activities that includes running, walking or jogging will stimulate the bones in the lower body and muscles to grow denser, thicker, and stronger.
